Sometime ago, I am the 1st to said that our nation is no independance!!

It is because, the energy we used are too dependance on Petrolium, which is reliaing on foreign imports. The fosil fuel economy have bought us to the become the economic super power of the world,. However, it is also because of us too much dependance on the fosil fuel to fuel our economy have brought us to the present great economy crisis.

In my letters to our presidents' in the 90's & 2000's, I have mentioned that our Knowledge Base economy would have to be the locomotive of the our economy for the 22 century. The have & have not between the board of management's & the base workers/Knowledge workers are too far of the gap!!.

Quoting the number from the reports' that I read, the Executives income are over 1,100 times of the base workers. However, in the great depression in 1929, the gap is about 290 times.

In the early 2000's I have spent sometime in understanding the MLM & so call network marketing, from there I realized that , the MLM the compensation programme already take roots in today American corporate. That is the basic cause of today economy crisis.

Just think about, any individual with conscense would really want to screw up their credits, loose their home, loose their jobs, loose their business; be on the street & put their life at risk?? The research figure by Milken Institute also revealed that we American are more atleast 200 times more productive than the last downturn in the late 80's.

Looks , our PC at home today are much more powerful then the mainframe in early 90's the IBM3033. The greeds are not at the bottoms as I mentioned in my speech in the 80-90's. The greeds are actually @ the very top of our corporate & capitalism entities.

Think about it, people are the assets of the nations' & on this world. If the my & large commoners are unable to survive, How could those, on the very top would be able to derive the multi-millions & Billions in their incomes??

The law of nature as Gotama said, you come to this world alone & when end of the present life. You have all our materialism acquired in this live time would be left behind, & you shall leaving with you your own karmic energy. Late Kenneth Lays of Enron is just a life example.

As my Guru Lao Zi said, Heavy Tax of the fellows citizen would lead to the collapse of the Nations.

In my opinion, our captialism system need to have a new Culture Revolution. It is not a sologan, it is the need to do it now, with heart & soul to bring our people out of the crisis & be a leader again to lead the world out of these mess.

P.S.

I have reason to believes that our economy would not be totally recovered as fast as in3-5 years.

This is based on my research on the case of the last economy crisis of Japan. In 1983, I said at the "Oversea Graduate Association Conference in Tokyo Japan", while Nikeii index is growing like rocket, I reasons it to their multi-national corporate elites that the time would come the Japan economy would crash!! That you see in the 90's Japan almost took 12 years to recover. With then our world economy leadership are still take firm roots.

But however, now we are real sick ourself. The medicines given in my opinion are not really solving the the roots of the illness.

President Obama would need the new team of think tanks & economy field generals who understand the cause of the conflicts between Landbase eConomy & the e-Economy. & work on the solutions

Otherwise, it would just like the 2001-2003 the .com become .bom that down turn, a even greater economy crisis in the making.

The following is my comments & advice to my fan's on flickr on the above issues.

flickr-Yahoo have over 100millions members now.

10,000views & even 1millions views is nothing.

So far only on flickr then one can have that experience of high view rates.

On the records there is one ex-account, he have 10millions views in about Over 10months. All his post are on Sexy; Voluptuous young girls. However, now he is no longer on flickr.

In my opinion; views rates is not importance.

The most importance is that the relationship that built for the loyal fan's & friend's keep coming back. In the long run through the network, hope that fruitful result could be generated & perhaps they gives you some good referrals for some serious business.

That is the key on the social networking in the old time & also e-sphere.

We are all in the knowledge base economy now; the way to survive is to produce the usable or applicable info products & services in exchange for living.

Which Way To The Future?
Globalization and technology are drastically changing how we do our jobs—and that's both a promise and a problem

The "Future of Work" is hardly a new topic. In fact, over the past quarter century, at least 20 books have used that phrase as part or all of their title.

So with all the words spilled on this question already, why is BusinessWeek addressing it now? The answer is simple: The U.S. and the global economies are coming to a crossroads that no one could have anticipated just a few years ago. Globalization and technology together are creating the potential for startling changes in how we do our jobs and the offices we do them in. Offshoring, for one, means work can be broken into smaller tasks and redistributed around the world. And the rapid growth of broader, richer channels of communication—including virtual worlds—is transforming what it means to be "at work."

Yet despite the technological and organizational progress, it's not clear whether we should look ahead to the future of work with enthusiasm or fear. Are Americans' jobs going to become more interesting and complex as rote tasks are moved offshore or eliminated by technology? Or will managers and workers be ground down by competitive pressures that leave little time or room for creativity and innovation?

Truth is, the trends prevailing in today's workplace provide ammunition for optimists and pessimists alike.

On the positive side, employers are hiring workers with higher and higher levels of education, and jobs are demanding ever more sophistication. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 34% of adult workers in the U.S. now have a bachelor's degree or better, up from 29% 10 years ago. What's more, the modern workplace no longer resembles the factory assembly line but rather the design studio, where the core values are collaboration and innovation, not mindless repetition. Talented people are still in high demand, and there's no evidence yet that work has become less interesting because of outsourcing. "On balance, I don't think that jobs are being fragmented," says Paul Osterman, a labor economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fully 60% of respondents to a BusinessWeek poll expect working conditions for the average person to be better in 10 years than they are now. That's according to an online survey of 2,000 U.S. executives and managers done in late June and early July. And in the same poll, 82% of respondents said that self-fulfillment will be a more powerful motivator than fear if we look 10 years out.

Then again, there are persistent signs that the gloomier outlook is gaining traction as well. Job satisfaction in the U.S. plummeted in 2006 to a record low. That's according to a survey of 5,000 households done for the Conference Board. Only 47% of workers were satisfied with their jobs in 2006, down from 59% in 1995. "The demands in the workplace have increased tremendously," says Lynn Franco, director of consumer research for the Conference Board, especially as technology has made it ever harder to get away from the job.

Even more disturbing, two decades of rising incomes for educated workers seem to have come to a halt, at least temporarily. When adjusted for inflation, the real wages and salaries of U.S. workers with at least a bachelor's degree are barely higher than they were in 2000, an unpleasant surprise in a world in which education is seen as the route to success.

The wage stagnation, combined with the 60% rise in college tuitions since 2000, seems to be discouraging many young Americans from getting a college education. The percentage of 25- 29-year-olds with at least a bachelor's degree has actually fallen during this decade. This raises the real possibility that this generation of young Americans may actually be less educated than the previous one, creating a growing gap between the kinds of people companies need and the workers who are actually available.

What can you do? Whether you are a manager or worker, this Special Report provides the intellectual tools and information you need to move toward the more optimistic vision. We'll look at the future of work—both in the short run and much farther out—from the best way to manage a global virtual team to the pros and cons of branding yourself, to the seemingly farfetched use of brain chips—yes, brain chips—to enhance your capabilities.

The first section examines work from the perspective of managers, focusing in particular on how to get an organization full of people from different cultures and backgrounds to collaborate efficiently and effectively. That's not an easy task, but we'll see how global giants, such as IBM (IBM ), Nokia (NOK ), and Dow Chemical, (DOW ) are able to accomplish it. Meanwhile, successful Indian companies—among them Infosys Technologies Ltd. (INFY ) and Satyam Computer Services (SAY )—demonstrate how they recruit, train, and retain workers in a hyper- competitive environment.

The next section peeks into the future from the perspective of workers. We'll explain how to avoid being "Bangalored" or "Shanghaied"—that is, having pieces of your job sent overseas. Our report's reassuring message: "The offshoring trend is moving with the speed of a road paver rather than a hot rod, so there's time for alert Americans and Europeans to scramble out of the way." That means moving up the value chain to take advantage of new opportunities. It also can mean literally moving from one country to another, as we describe how Europe's mobile labor force easily crosses national borders, perhaps giving a glimpse of where the rest of the world is heading.

Finally, the third section of the Special Report considers the impact of technology on the workplace, ranging from improved telecommuting to new techniques that help sleep-deprived workers, a serious problem in many occupations. In the future, advances in communication could enable new forms of workplace organization and mass collaboration of an unprecedented sort.

Beyond that, we ask: Will this be an invigorating "new world of empowered individuals encased in a bubble of time-saving technologies? Or will it be a brave new world of virtual sweatshops...?" For example, Wikipedia, the tremendously successful online encyclopedia, harnesses the efforts of thousands of volunteers to create something of great utility to society. But using a similar innovation in a profit-making corporation carries both enormous promise and problems.

In fact, the emerging ways that the workplace is being restructured have not yet been stress-tested. They have evolved in a period of rapid global growth, and no one knows how they will react if the world economy hits a rocky patch. We have entered uncharted territory—and that's why this special report offers guideposts rather than a Google-esque road map.

Still, when the future of work comes to pass, will it be a bright or bleak one for most people? "I'll be optimistic," says MIT'sOsterman. We are, too.

It was supposed to be simple. Riding on the success of its U.S.-based photo-sharing site Flickr, Yahoo rolled out country-specific versions of its site in order to bring its popular photo-sharing community to users in their native languages.

But when the sites went live in Germany, Korea and Singapore, something was wrong. Users in these countries saw a different version of Flickr--one where the content filters were locked on "Safe," preventing access to content flagged "Moderate" or "Restricted."

There was no warning on the company blog. No message to the users. And now what seemed like a straightforward move towards expansion has snowballed into one of the largest user revolts the site has ever seen.

Most of the ire has stemmed from German users. With photos displaying everything from artistic nudes to historic Nazi memorabilia getting the axe, its users have been the most vocal about Flickr's recent move. But what started as puzzlement quickly turned to confusion and anger.

The site has fairly clear guidelines as to how content is filtered. So why weren't its users (many of whom are consenting adults) allowed to control the filters? For the first day this question remained unanswered from the site's management.

"I just have carefully read [the Flickr ToS], line by line," remarked a Flickr user in an online forum, "and I found no hint about what may cause this to happen. I can only assume that there is someone running mad. And I demand a clear and lucid explanation by Flickr staff."

Meanwhile, the revolt went into full swing as German users began uploading literally thousands of anti-Flickr pictures over the course of the first 24 hours. As pictures continued to pop up under the tag "thinkflickrthink," uneasiness started to set in amongst the users. How long was Flickr going to go without addressing this?

News came on Wednesday by way of a statement from Flickr's cofounder Stewart Butterfield: "We really apologize for the delay in responding to these threads. ... We have absolutely no intention of censoring the content on the community's behalf. It is always been our intention that Flickr members participate to whatever extent they want and are as free as possible create their own experience.."

Although this statement showed that the issue was finally on Flickr's radar, German users still felt that the site's actions lacked a motive. It wasn't until Thursday that Community Manager, Heather Champ went on the record to state Flickr's case: "The central problem is that Germany has much more stringent age verification laws than its neighboring countries," she said. She went on to describe the risks of breaking these laws as "much harsher penalties, including jail time, for those with direct responsibility."

Even if Flickr's moves stem from legal concerns, its cardinal sin has less to do with legality and more with communication. Limiting the expression of your users is something that could be feasibly tolerated--given that a temporary timetable and viable reason are cited. But when the user base is left in the dark, and it happens to be a large, well-connected community equipped with the ability to broadcast its message quickly, the stakes are raised. When Digg faced a similar scenario in May, it was Kevin Rose's address to the users that helped quell the HD DVD rebellion. In the case of Flickr, this same type of transparency will need to be employed to prevent its community from scattering.

Flickr officials have not responded to Wired News' requests for comment, other than to point out the statements they have already made on the public forums.

[I'm CEO of Zooomr]

Well it is with great disappointment that I found myself yet again a victim of censorship on Flickr. Earlier today while engaging in a debate about Flickr's recent censorship in Germany I had over a dozen of my comments permanently deleted out of a debate by Flickr staff.

You can see the references to my involvement in the debate here and here among other places.

It's ironic that of all places that Flickr would choose to censor me would be in a thread protesting their censorship. And without any warning even or explanation.

This is not the first time I've been censored by Flickr.

The points that I was making in my debate about censorship on Flickr had a lot to do with what I see as problems at Yahoo. The fact that their CEO is the highest paid CEO in the United States, the fact that Yahoo 2 days ago rejected an important shareholder proposal denouncing censorship. And yes this most recent issue of censorship where people in Germany can only access Flickr in "safe mode."

Now some might say that it's not right for me as a competitor to Yahoo to be critical of their practices. But let me point you to the screen shot above. It comes from Flickr employee Dunstan Orchard's public zipline on Zooomr. Dunstan and other Flickr employees have been on Zooomr disparaging our site for the past week. So to me it seems a tad hypocritical that when I legitimately object to censorship on Flickr that I would have my words censored, while Flickr staff seems to feel that it's perfectly appropriate to disparage Zooomr over at Zooomr.

It's not right. And what Flickr doesn't understand is that by censoring your critic you only make him stronger. I'm sure it's probably only a matter of time before I get kicked off of Flickr entirely. All my photographs destroyed and deleted as well. Over 40,000 comments from many good friends.

This is the difference though between me and Flickr. When Dunstan and other Flickr employees disparaged Zooomr I let their words stand. Rather than censor them, I took the high road and did not. Meanwhile Flickr continues to build a name for itself: Flickr = censorship. Silencing me will not change this and it's a sad state of affairs to see happen to the Flickr that I once loved so much and that even now professes to "love me" on the little icon above my page.

Censorship is borne out of fear and weakness. This is something always to remember.

I have been a supporter of flickr like TH all along. Although I have a Zooomr account, but I am not too active.

To me, These events are a history repeated by itself of flickr-Yahoo.

Yahoo - flickr = Yahoo!

TH is a user of flickr. However, flickr have the Supreme God & goddess. Whom decide who should be censored; block or deleted...etc.

I have experience that since Sept 29, 2005 till today.

To me flickr is a great photo management community, but over time the Power - politics seem to be happening in both internal & external which are the "customers".

If the management on the top is assuming the imperialism management or authoritarian style then e-gangsterism or e-hooliganism would born naturally.

TH is good heart by sounding out for flickr to improve. It means well & good. However, that is not really appreciated as my earlier experiences.

Perhaps it is the same as what I have been served & f-team God think that it is a threat to their existence.

Especially, TH have commented at his own flickr. Which they have the power to do what they want. Anytime a violating the TOS can just created. & then they can exercise their power.

flickr junior staffs messing at Zooomr site are totally un-professional in the web2.0 era.

Thanks for telling your story as well. Even though higher profile cases like yours and Rebekka's, Kris Krug's (Flickr took down a cease and desist letter he got from a photographer who was ripping him off), mine etc. get attention, just imagine how many people this happens to all the time at Flickr who have no recourse.

The problem is that Flickr just does not take their responsibility of censoring seriously. They censor willy nilly and your case is but another example. When it's a high enough profile case they fix and issue but another hollow apology as they have done in your case.

Flickr says that in the future that they will err on the side of "caution" with regards to censorship but refuses to outline what steps they will specifically take to ensure that they follow through with their promises. Heather Champ, Flickr's Community manager says that because you agree to Flickr's terms of service that when they delete your stuff that it "is not and cannot be viewed as censorship."

Heck, they refuse to even admit that they censored me despite sending me a threatening email threating to shut down my account.

What makes it worse is that rather than have a serious debate about how to make Flickr a better and less censored place, Flickr Chief Stewart Butterfield would rather write PR spin comments on my blog "challenging" me to write that child porn would be ok into Zooomr's TOS.

You know I have a blog on blogger (owned by Google). I'm sure somewhere in their TOS I've agreed to give them some power over my blog. But you know what? If blogger ever came and deleted a blog post I wrote I'd be just as pissed. Blogger is every bit a platform for ideas as Flickr is.

Thanks for blogging your story and raising more awareness on this important topic.

A female freelance writer who blogged about the pornography industry was threatened with rape. A single mother who blogged about "the daily ins and outs of being a mom" was threatened by a cyber-stalker who claimed that she beat her son and that he had her under surveillance. Kathy Sierra, who won a large following by blogging about designing software that makes people happy, became a target of anonymous online attacks that included photos of her with a noose around her neck and a muzzle over her mouth.

As women gain visibility in the blogosphere, they are targets of sexual harassment and threats. Men are harassed too, and lack of civility is an abiding problem on the Web. But women, who make up about half the online community, are singled out in more starkly sexually threatening terms -- a trend that was first evident in chat rooms in the early 1990s and is now moving to the blogosphere, experts and bloggers said.

More technology news

A 2006 University of Maryland study on chat rooms found that female participants received 25 times as many sexually explicit and malicious messages as males. A 2005 study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that the proportion of Internet users who took part in chats and discussion groups plunged from 28 percent in 2000 to 17 percent in 2005, entirely because of the exodus of women. The study attributed the trend to "sensitivity to worrisome behavior in chat rooms."

Joan Walsh, editor in chief of the online magazine Salon, said that since the letters section of her site was automated a year and a half ago, "it's been hard to ignore that the criticisms of women writers are much more brutal and vicious than those about men."

Arianna Huffington, whose Huffington Post site is among the most prominent of blogs founded by women, said anonymity online has allowed "a lot of those dark prejudices towards women to surface." Her site takes a "zero tolerance" policy toward abusive and excessively foul language, and employs moderators "24/7" to filter the comments, she said.

Sierra, whose recent case has attracted international attention, has suspended blogging. Other women have censored themselves, turned to private forums or closed comments on blogs. Many use gender-neutral pseudonyms. Some just gut it out. But the effect of repeated harassment, bloggers and experts interviewed said, is to make women reluctant to participate online -- undercutting the promise of the Internet as an egalitarian forum.

Robert Scoble, a technology blogger who took a week off in solidarity with Sierra, said women have told him that harassment is a "disincentive" to participate online. That, he said, will affect their job prospects in the male-dominated tech industry. "If women aren't willing to show up for networking events, either offline or online, then they're never going to be included in the industry," he said.

The treatment of women online is not just an equivalent of what happens offline, some women say. The Internet allows the content to be seen immediately, often permanently and far more widely than a remark scribbled on a restroom wall.

"The sad thing is, I've had thousands of messages from women saying, 'You were a role model for me,' " Sierra said in an interview, describing communications she received after suspending her blog. Sierra was the first woman to deliver a keynote speech at a conference on the Linux operating system. Her blog was No. 23 in the Technorati.com Top 100 list of blogs, measured by the number of blogs that linked to her site.

Her Web site, Creating Passionate Users, was about "the most fluffy and nice things," she said. Sierra occasionally got the random "comment troll," she said, but a little over a month ago, the posts became more threatening. Someone typed a comment on her blog about slitting her throat and ejaculating. The noose photo appeared next, on a site that sprang up to harass her. On the site, someone contributed this comment: "the only thing Kathy has to offer me is that noose in her neck size."

A court has ruled against Yahoo Inc.'s China arm in a lawsuit that accused it of aiding music piracy, the company and a music industry group said Tuesday.

The ruling came amid U.S. pressure for Beijing to stop rampant copying of music and other goods.

The lawsuit filed by the International Federation of Phonographic Industries accused Yahoo (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) China of violating copyrights because its search engine linked to sites that carried 229 pirated songs. It was filed on behalf of 11 recording companies including Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) BMG, Warner Music, EMI (other-otc: EMIPY.PK - news - people ) and Universal Vivendi.

"We're very pleased with the outcome," said Leong May Seey, Asia regional director for the federation. "We think it is a step in the right direction in creating a legitimate online music service in China."

The ruling Monday by the No. 2 Intermediate People's Court ordered Yahoo China to pay 210,000 yuan ($27,000) in damages, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Court employees declined to confirm the report or release any other information.

Leong said she did not know the exact damages awarded but said they appeared to be well below the 5.5 million yuan ($700,000) sought.

"We are considering our options with the damages, whether we will appeal or not," Leong said.

Yahoo China said it would appeal and stressed its respect for intellectual property rights.

"We will appeal this decision because we believe Yahoo China's music search service both meets and exceeds the relevant legal standards for intellectual property protection," a company statement said. "An important principle is at stake in this case - search engine operators should not be held liable for content posted on third-party Web sites."

Yahoo China is operated by Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo's local partner, Alibaba.com, China's biggest online commerce site.

The IFPI filed a similar lawsuit last year against China's most popular search engine, Baidu.com (nasdaq: BIDU - news - people ) Inc. A court ruled in Baidu's favor in November. The IFPI is appealing.

Leong said the IFPI has filed administrative complaints with the Chinese government against other music-linking services and might pursue more lawsuits.

"We will be taking further action in other cases," she said.

China is the world's biggest sources of illegally copied products ranging from Hollywood movies and designer clothing to sporting goods and medications.

Beijing has increased penalties for product pirates and launched repeated crackdowns. But illegally copied music, software, designer handbags and other goods are widely available.

Using a google search on Flickr Suck return about 10,000 results.

Common complaints, Flickr has no concern for issues of their users, vague rules that essentially give Flickr Admins unlimited power to censor, confusing interface, 关闭工具条, well it all sucks.

What does not suck about Flickr? Some of the community. Certainly there are some jerks who have no talent and spend their time talking about me and how I should be censored, but they are a perverted minority, but the strenght of connections I have formed with real friends on this group, and the fact Yahoo! corporation (with its billions in Chinese money) can't crush us.

Seems a consenting adult section is needed. Some things interest me, some don't, but it should be my decision to check it out, or not. No one forced me to read your work, I did because I wanted to. I can see kids need to be weeded out....but to just flip the switch, pull the cord, kill the site for politics, or whatever reason is one sided censorship.

Now if you were writing about say, Yahoo, which owns Flickr, and there stance on censorship concerning the State censorship on the internet, as in China, and such, and their lust for the almighty yen in the Chinese market, bet you'd been shut down a lot sooner. First of all, I do lament to loss of your site, but you have to remember that flickr is a business---a BIG BUSINESS---especially since the purchase by Yahoo. Freedom of speech is an essential element of the US culture and you can have all you want on your own site. As a part of the big business cog, Flickr will attempt to silence anyone with an opinion contrary to the business of making money. Doesn't matter if it's liberal or conservative, if it detracts from their business, they'll shut you down. And you know what? They have the right to do that.

That said, I will protest to Flickr because I enjoyed to debate on your site. It was rarely personal and always interesting. I come from a more conservative point of view, but I always enjoyed the views of others, whether I agreed with them or not. And I can't see how debates like this or even a few boobs would mean that Flickr's business would be threatened.

So more power to you, Gail. I am going ot spread the word once again!!!

I am outraged! I suspect it was he politics. Though our American government is also decidedly anti-tit.. Fuckr is not the only one cowering before an inflated, paranoid government.

You are not the only one being censored Gail. There is something rotten going on. For the second time in two years my Gmail password has been reset - that was today! I couldn't log on to get my email! In my case it's most probably the US government. They have investigated me before by tapping my email, changing the passcode on my phone - twice! - and Homeland Security under the guise of the FBI even investigated me once for something I had written.

We no longer live in a free society. Our rights are being eroded on a daily basis. "Free speech" has become an antiquated catch phrase. Personally, I don't mind speaking up. I wouldn't mind going to prison for it.

Flickr was once a bastion for free speech. It has since been purchased by a huge conglomerate that no longer respects anything more than its bottom line. "Don't make waves" seems to be the phrase of the day.

I don't think it was the politics at all. I'm very sure it was the breasts. Americans are, in general, terribly puritanical and repressed. Tits scare the hell out of most Americans. While we've a tendency to talk tough about terrorism, an exposed nipple sends us screaming in terror.

I have been enjoying your photo postings. I am sorry you were deleted, Ms. Orenstein. My understanding of the policy is that you must tag your stuff if it has content so it cannot be seen by those who have left their filters up. If you do not tag after being asked to, you are nipsa'd, which means all your work is tagged to be filtered, regardless of content. So, did you tag? If not, why weren't you just nipsa'd? This is the first I've heard of someone being deleted.

Mar 4th , 2007 is the 1st time I use Artsy Nudes & is is a sihoulette of the back of the pic, but I am served a warning email saying I post frontal Nudes & expose genital.....

I have been grown up in the Ironman hand from baby time, when I return to Asia, my artsy nudes books were confiscated at the custom,
Even I appeal to the Minister of Art & his boss - the Ironman , I still cannot get back the manuals. As the custom officers already cover their track.

They are believed to be death lists.

I have not signed up any contacts except may be 80 of them which worth for me to write Testimonials.

As I understand, China have their own filtering system on the Net. Nudes Art is not block in China. Pornographies Yes, is illegal, the offender can be sentence to death as I believe. If an US or European Union based company have been enlisted by China to work on the security & filtering system for China.

As on Dec 31 2006, China net citizen already surpassed USA. Become number one in the world on internet.

I have been traveling China & talking to people on the "Have & Have Not" issues on Digital & internet. That includes all level .

To China Jerry Yang may be the founder of Yahoo, but it does not concern them as Jerry is from Taiwan & now believe is US citizen.

Whereas, Alibaba is the local brew corp. & If it is not supported by the China Gov back finance, then Alibaba cannot reverse took over Yahoo China.

He is right to say that Balance of trade is need to examing the Import & Export figures. Which he believed that much of the inflows of $67Billions capital is the factor for this mis-represented surplus.

China's Trade Surplus May Be an Illusion
Standard Chartered Bank's senior economist argues that the enormous global trade surplus could be the result of data smoke and mirrors - By Stephen Green

The export of fake goods out of China is commonplace whether you are talking about designer bags, blockbuster movie DVDs, or "Mont Blanc" pens. Many European and U.S. holidaymakers take these knock-offs home with them -- some of them knowing they're counterfeit; others are unaware. Underground Chinese firms spirit such goods out of the mainland on a much larger scale.

Now we may we have identified another fake: the supposedly gargantuan global trade surplus China enjoys with the rest of the world. Much of China's trade surplus in 2005 was not trade at all, we think, but rather capital inflows (perhaps as much as $67 billion) disguised as trade. If so, this has major implications for China's trade policies, the yuan, and the way the U.S. deals with China.

China shocked much of the world last year when it reported that its global trade surplus had more than tripled to $102 billion or 4.5% of revised gross domestic product. To some trade hawks and U.S. congressmen this number provided yet more evidence that Chinese exports were contributing to the hollowing out of the U.S. manufacturing sector and stealing American jobs. And they believed this was achieved unfairly, that Beijing had manipulated its currency and engaged in suspect policies such as extending unfair utilities subsidies to Chinese factories and banning workers from joining trade unions to give China an economic edge.

A CLOSER LOOK. Because of China's comparative advantage in labor-intensive manufacturing, plenty of others accepted the big spike at face value. Given China's international image as the "world's factory," it made sense to them that China's exports should have swelled. But the sudden rise in the number puzzled economists.

Why? Well, first, we know countries that export a lot tend also to import a lot -- and none more so than China. It's a developing country with few natural resources, dependent on Asian and Western firms sending in components to be assembled in coastal factories. As a percentage of GDP, China's trade surplus was actually declining through 1999 to 2004.

Economists also puzzled over what had changed from 2004 (when the trade account was only $32 billion) to 2005. A big swing like that usually means something serious is changing within the domestic economy, such as either a big increase in savings or a drop in investment inside China's own borders. But when we looked, we could not see evidence of either scenario.

TRADE DISPARITY. So we took a closer look at the trade figures. The biggest puzzle was this: When you compare China's trade numbers with those of its key trade partners there are big discrepancies -- as high as 80% in some years. In theory, bi-lateral trade data should show that China imports roughly the same as, say, big trading partners such as South Korea or the U.S. export to the mainland. But in fact, China imports far more than other countries export to China and exports far less than its neighbors import from it.

One explanation for this is straightforward -- and not unique to China. Compare any country's exports to its partners' imports and you will also find some disparity in how trade is calculated. Exports are usually calculated on a "free on board" basis -- meaning their value at the point of customs. The value of imports is generally treated differently and includes things such as insurance and freight costs.

Trade experts estimate that the difference between exports and imports, which are higher in value, is usually about 15% of the value of the exports. But that was not enough to explain the huge gap that has existed between China's numbers and its partners'. So we turned to look at something special about China's trade.

UNCLEAR DATA? A big chunk of mainland goods pass through Hong Kong before shipping out to overseas markets. And how that is accounted for in the trade data makes a world of difference. Consider the differing approaches of China and the U.S. on this score.

China does not count all of the goods exported to the U.S. via Hong Kong so its export number is likely to be understated. Chinese trade authorities say they make this exclusion because their tracking data on the final destination of the goods leaving Hong Kong isn't always clear enough. The U.S. Commerce Dept., meanwhile, considers all exports out of the mainland that transit through Hong Kong -- and that ultimately arrive at U.S. ports -- in the final tally of Chinese exports to the U.S.

Not only that, it includes the value-added -- that is, the added mark-up on the cost of goods that Hong Kong trading firms impose for services rendered -- in Hong Kong. This method of trade accounting adds 20% to 30% more to the total value of outbound mainland goods, and we think the result is that the U.S. export number for China is exaggerated. As a result, the U.S. says its bilateral deficit with China was $202 billion in 2005, while China says it was $114 billion. The correct answer should be somewhere in between.

PLAYING DOCTOR. But that did not solve our problem completely either, because the trade gap remained. In fact, when we looked at the gap as a percentage of total trade, it has been falling since 2001. Although China exports less than its trade partners import, it is now exporting a lot more vis-á-vis partner imports than four years ago.

So we played with the numbers some more and believe we have found evidence that there is a problem on the Chinese side as well. Some mainland trading firms are doctoring the export and import invoices submitted to Chinese customs officials to get around capital controls and bring in more foreign hard currency than their trade transactions would justify. The economic incentive is clear enough: The Chinese yuan is widely expected to appreciate in the years ahead, and is an attractive investment for companies or speculators.

Why all the subterfuge? China's capital account restrictions make it difficult to bring U.S. dollars onshore and convert that money into yuan for domestic companies and ordinary Chinese people. But Chinese exporters and trading companies have a far easier time, due to the nature of their business. An exporter willing to exaggerate an invoice handed over to local authorities could bring far more hard currency into the country than warranted by the value of goods sold.

IN THE FAMILY. This "mis-invoicing" of trade was commonplace in the last decade, but back then it was a way of getting money out of China. Now we think it is being used to bring funds in, given the strong likelihood the yuan will appreciate in value relative to foreign currencies down the road. This again inflates the value of Chinese exports.

The exaggeration in the value of Chinese exports is probably getting another boost from the phenomenon of transfer pricing. This involves the price at which transactions between units of multinationals take place. When a mainland company trades with a sister company or affiliate offshore, the value of goods depends a great deal on where the company wants to book the profit.

Usually firms will ensure that profit on trade transactions within a company are booked in lower tax jurisdictions. And that has usually meant offshore in the past, given the relatively high tax rates on the mainland compared to Hong Kong and other regional economies.

PRE-SHIPPING PRICE. But with the yuan now appreciating against many regional currencies, that is starting to change. Imagine a mainland-based laptop maker with a production facility at home and a subsidiary in Hong Kong. This Chinese company has an order to sell a laptop with a retail price of $1,000 to a computer store chain in the U.S.

In the past, in order to minimize profit and hence tax bills, the parent company would sell the computer first to the subsidiary at a price very close to the actual cost of production, say $500, and then the subsidiary would ship it off to the States. Now, with the yuan starting to appreciate, there is an incentive to actually book a bigger profit or to price this laptop at $800. In other words, the value of the laptop ultimately shipped overseas would rise. And this trend, multiplied over thousands of price transfers could be inflating China's trade surplus.

REDUCTIONS AHEAD?. We ran the numbers to try and work out the likely impact of mis-invoicing and transfer pricing and were surprised by the results. Our numbers show that the China's trade surplus could have been as small as $35 billion in 2005. Trade could have disguised some $67 billion of non-trade capital inflows. We made a long list of assumptions to get to this number, and we are not claiming that it is absolutely accurate. But it does give a hint as to the potential scale of these foreign currency inflows.

So, say we are right. Then there are two big implications for China's policymakers. First, China's booming trade surplus does not necessarily indicate new and real pressures for yuan appreciation. This is another reason for cautious currency appreciation. As soon as the yuan reaches a point where expectations of appreciation disappear, China's trade surplus could suddenly be sharply reduced. Second, Beijing has said that it will try and bring down the trade surplus in 2006.

There have been calls to increase the tax rate on foreign-invested enterprises (which concentrate in the export sector) or to reduce the value-added tax rebate exporters enjoy. But if we are right, then the case for such policies is weak.

The number of phishing Web sites skyrocketed in December, as did the number of sites designed to spread password-stealing badware, according to the most recent report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group.

The number of unique phishing sites jumped from 4,630 in November to
7,197 in December, a 55 percent increase. Online scam artists also
targeted a wider range of companies in their phishing sites. One scam found at the end of 2005 targeted customers who shop at Wal-Mart's Web site, telling their their accounts had been compromised.

Another notable phishing attack in December went out in an e-mail impersonating the Internal Revenue Service,
linking to a bogus IRS site that claimed to offer recipients a way to
check on the status of their tax refund. We've seen IRS phishing
attacks before, and we are likely to see more of them in the coming
weeks.

December also brought a massive increase in phishing-based Trojan horse programs as well as keyloggers
-- nasty programs designed to intercept sensitive information the
victim enters into banking, e-commerce or Webmail accounts. According
to the APWG, the number of Web sites using browser vulnerabilities to
attempt keylogger installs exploded to at least 1,912 in December, up
83 percent from November.

That growth was spurred in large part by the discovery of two critical security flaws in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser -- MS05-054 and MS06-001
-- that allowed malicious Web sites to install software on the
visitor's computer. The APWG report said its members spotted hundreds
of sites using exploits for those vulnerabilities to install
keystroke-logging software.

My prediction is there would be 3 Kingdoms in the Web IM segment if not would be big 5. 2 big guns would not be good for the user.

There is an upside and downside to the alliances forming in the war of the virtual worlds.

The downside is the partnering could mean the pie is shrinking and we're near a top of the market. The upside is that all the unlikely formations are as riveting to watch as some of the best movies out there.

Terry Semel, CEO of Yahoo!, the world’s most successful Internet company, is unimpressed by Google’s hype. In an exclusive “Globes” interview, he tells how he saved Yahoo! from collapse, and marks his next target: entering the media field.

Saturday night, April 9, 9:00 pm. Terminal 1 at Ben Gurion Airport is completely deserted. Only in the Massada reception room, which, like most VIP reception rooms, is located in the back of the terminal, where the masses will not disturb the VIPs' rest, is there any movement. There is a representative of the Israel Immigration Police, a group of security men, and someone acting as a host-waiter. The only passengers at the moment, on a private 10:00 pm flight, are Terry Semel and his wife, Jane. Wearing Nike sports shoes, with slightly unkempt hair and several days’ beard on his face, Semel doesn’t look like the chairman and CEO of the world’s largest Internet company, the man who only recently exercised options for at least $230 million, and contributed $25 million to a neuro-psychiatric institute at the University of California.

Semel takes care to stress that he is on a private visit. “My wife and I very much wanted to visit Israel. We came as tourists just to see it, and it’s great; we had a very good time,” he gushes. “We saw quite a lot. We met many people, and visited pretty places. We’re already thinking about the next time.” On the other hand, when an out-of-the-way place like Israel hosts a Jew as highly placed as Semel, public matters becomes intermingled with private ones. Even the security arrangements for getting on the plane are carried out with a maximum of respect and a minimum of bother for the traveling couple. “You can’t do this; he’s the owner of Yahoo!,” one of the security people rebukes his colleagues on his walkie-talkie.

Despite the fact that he is now completely identified with Yahoo!, Semel’s entry into the company wasn’t smooth and easy. While he is responsible, together with Bob Daley, for turning Warner Brothers into the media and entertainment giant that it is today, the rules in Hollywood differ from the rules of the Internet, and the laws governing public companies are very different from those applying to private companies. On the other hand, after 24 years, and given his record, Semel could have arranged a far more glittering job than an Internet company that had got into trouble and had begun a painful streamlining process. Semel’s resume seemingly includes nothing that qualifies him to manage a technology company. “Terry wasn’t looking for a job,” Daley said at the time. “He was looking for a challenge.”

Semel found his challenge, and met it. Within a few quarters, he won a place in Yahoo!’s hall of fame, and put on the best and most enviable show in Silicon Valley. He raised Yahoo! from a rock bottom market cap of just over $4 billion to a company with a market cap of $48 billion, double that of General Motors, the epitome of American industry. He took the company from wrenching losses of tens of millions of dollars to record revenue of $3.57 billion, and a net profit of $840 million. The significance is greater than the increase in the numbers. Semel turned a hard to quantify dot.com phenomenon into a stable, robust moneymaking machine. In a more universal sense, he was making a statement about the health of technology companies. The era when the philosophy of “if you built it, and it attracts a lot of clicks, go on running it,” came to an end. The philosophy of the Semel era is based on a solid economic foundation.

Semel also personally deviates to some degree from the norm for the industry that he leads. When he became chairman and CEO of Yahoo!, he admitted that he usually didn’t use e-mail. “I’m still a beginner in the Internet, but I’ve learned a lot,” he confessed on his visit to Israel. His conduct and management style are more reminiscent of the old-style movie tycoons than those of managers of the world’s largest and fastest growing Internet companies. In contrast to high-tech managers, who love seeing their pictures in the newspapers and reading their chatter with the media, Semel’s motto is “results talk.” An attempt to query whether the dot.com bubble was recurring was rejected on the spot. Semel prefers using old economy expressions.

“I can’t speak for every company, or for the entire Internet, but I think there are several really stable and serious Internet companies, and Yahoo! is one of them. These companies have great business, and are growing consistently year-by-year. These are serious businesses; they’re here to stay, and they have enormous opportunities for growth.”

“Google Doesn’t Frighten Me”

Semel is described as being suspicious of the media, secretive, and standoffish. He is known as somebody who doesn’t usually give interviews to the media. “Yahoo! has the best business model in the Internet,” he said in an interview not long ago, “and it has nothing to do with getting your picture in the paper, but with doing the real thing: performance and consistency in the long term.”

When we sit down for an interview, he really seems ill at ease. His answers are short and correct. “That’s the last question, right?” he hints. On the other hand, he is considered a tough warrior in the market. As Yahoo! COO Dan Rosensweig puts it, “He expects a new fight every day.”

Semel’s biggest and most widely publicized battle was with Google. In mid-2000, when Google was a search engine just past the start-up phase, Yahoo! adopted it as its search engine. Two years afterward, little Google, with its elegant home page, began to sound like a giant, and started primping itself for an IPO. This was one of Semel’s biggest tests: the apprentice was turning on his master, and boasting that he would beat him in a duel. Semel wouldn’t concede. In late 2002, he acquired Inktomi, which develops search technologies, for $235 million. Just over a year ago, he re-launched Inktomi as Yahoo!’s search engine, and said goodbye to Google. Since then, Google has held a successful IPO, touched a $50 billion market cap, and become the media’s darling. Semel, in any case, is not worried about lagging behind. “We’ve been in the search field with our engine for about a year,” he says. “I think we did excellent work during this year, and there will be many developments and innovations.”

Globes: Google has become a tough competitor. The markets and the media like it.

Terry Semel: Google is a very good search company, and Yahoo! is also a very good search company. You musn’t forget, however, that Yahoo! is more than just search. We have many functions, and we have a great many competitors in each function and in each vertical in which we operate, whether it’s news, sports, finance, or games.”

As the technology market revives, this competition will only get stiffer.

Yahoo! is used to competition. I think that good competition is a healthy thing. We hope to be very good in everything we’ve done, and that we’ll do in the future. In general, our goal is to supply our consumers with the best products and services.”

This is where one of the main differences between Yahoo! and Google lies. Google positions itself as a boutique, with a few high-quality services, such as free e-mail with an unprecedented volume of 2 gigabytes. Yahoo! positions itself as a supermarket, in which you can buy any Internet product you want: chat rooms on any topic, news services, travel agencies, bargain sales, a financial portal, sports and television experiences, career management, and finding a job. Yahoo!’s strategy is to offer everything, thereby making itself the default option for everyone who needs something on the Internet. With this strategy, you have to be very good in what you do, but you don’t have to be the best, because excellence lies in the array of functions. “Diversity has paid off for Yahoo!, which has become an Internet destination for finding other sites, and any kind of information,” CBS analyst Larry Magid explains.

There is another significant difference between Yahoo! and Google’s concepts. Google is trying to save and improve the world with its products and solutions. It invests in markets that don’t exist yet. Yahoo! does not purport to change the world; it follows the existing markets that it wants to conquer. “I wake up every morning thinking about what our customers want,” Semel said a few months ago, thereby crowning Yahoo!’s consumers as its formal programmers.

The Future Lies in the Entertainment Industry

Competition between Yahoo! and Google is waning, however, as the companies pick up speed on their divergent roads. Current market wisdom holds that Google is planning to develop computer and Internet infrastructure functions, such as an operating system and browser, in competition with Microsoft. Yahoo!, on the other hand, is going to Hollywood; the company is bolstering its entertainment content. Its biggest competitor is therefore America Online-Time Warner. Last year, Yahoo! founded a new entertainment division, located in Santa Monica, near Hollywood, with enough space to contain a thousand employees. Former ABC Entertainment Television Group chairman Lloyd Braun manages the division, and more managers were recruited from Warner Brothers, Semel’s previous place of employment, to work with Braun. They have already managed to sign a content cooperation agreement with several major studios and producers, such as Mark Burnett, the producer of “The Apprentice” and “Survivor.”

In a rare public comment, Semel confirmed that Yahoo! is moving in the direction of content production. “Yahoo! rests on four basic pages: personalization, large communities of people, content, and search,” he explains. “Over the years, it has invested quite a lot in all of these four pages. This has also left its mark in terms of content.

“Content is something that Yahoo! has always done, whether through licenses, collecting, or on occasion creating our own slices of content for our users. I plan to continue following this route. It’s not new. It’s the same route, but the advantages of broadband enable us to assemble more video, which will be a significant component, and greatly enrich the experience of our consumers. High-speed Internet facilitates a better experience, and enables people to download music and see new things, whether it’s news, sports, or games. We’re there in everything that’s digital and makes it possible for us to supply a better product and provide a better service.”

Is that why you’re cooperating with producers and studios?

Right now, we’re in touch and cooperating with many content companies. We get licensed content from them, whether it’s news, sports, games, pictures, or other activities, and they enable us to do a better job. In the future, we may also connect with the major studios.”

Semel is discreet, and does not provide details, but the market believes that Yahoo! is going for a merger or strategic cooperation with giants, on the America Online-Time-Warner model. For his part, Semel prefers cooperation to a merger. “As an Internet-media company, Yahoo! believes that television networks, movie studios, and music companies should regard it more as a partner than as a candidate for a merger,” he said recently at an investment conference in New York. “I think that there’s another alternative, and Yahoo! is a perfect partner, which can help the conventional media. We don’t want to look like television.” On another occasion, he explained that Yahoo!’s production possibilities will not be movies or television programs, because as a media, the Internet has to be interactive.

In any case, Semel does not believe that the Internet will wipe out the traditional communications media, with which he wants to create close cooperation. Yahoo! will come to this wedding as a strong distribution channel, if not the strongest on the Internet. Yahoo! can distribute exclusive content that relies on the studios (such as 40 minutes of every episode of “The Apprentice”, which is broadcast on the website on the same day as the television broadcast), and joint content. Semel does not disclose in public all his ideas in the field, and the hints that he does throw out are carefully scrutinized. For example, a month and a half ago, he said that Yahoo! believed that that it could create simple content by developing new ways for its hundreds of millions of users to create and distribute their content. He has also made a few non-committal hints about blogs, the latest Internet hit.

Another option emerges from remarks by UBS Warburg analyst Ben Schachter: “I can easily imagine how, in another five years, I’ll be using my credit card to pay Yahoo! to watch a movie premier on my computer.” In any event, regardless of what content Yahoo! produces, “It will have to be more special and smarter” than other mass media, Semel summed up on Yahoo!’s tenth birthday.

As part of its entry into the entertainment game, Yahoo! acquired MusicMatch, a program for downloading and managing music files, for $160 million at the end of last year. “Yahoo! is committed to being the leading player in digital music,” Semel declared at the time. “It matches our strategy of catching the largest consumer audiences when they switch to digital music, and supports our goal of providing consumers with more possibilities for selection, control, and flexibility in the way that they connect with music. This acquisition was one of several innovative products in which Yahoo! will invest in the future in order to build a music portfolio.”

An intriguing aspect of Yahoo!’s entertainment activity came to light during Semel’s visit to Channel 10, the new baby of his friend, movie producer Arnon Milchan. Semel and Milchan, who has become a significant partner in the channel, first became acquainted when Milchan was doing business with Warner Brothers, and distributed its movies. During Semel’s visit, the subject of cooperation with Channel 10 on content was raised. When I asked Semel about the possibility of such cooperation, he was careful not to reveal too much. “They asked, and this is something that I’ll look into after my vacation, when I return to California.” He eventually remarks, “At the moment, I think it’s still not ripe, and I prefer not to comment on it.”

Personalized Internet

While the Yahoo! supermarket continues to expand, offering more and more categories, and more and more products in each in category, Semel is also steeriing the company into personalization. For example, Yahoo! communicates with its customers in over 15 languages, and perhaps, in the future, Hebrew will become a Yahoo! language. Another personal element is making the site more localized. “If you are looking for a plumber or a pizza parlor, you don't want one 3,000 miles away,” Semel explained two months ago. “You want your search to be customized just for you. That means including very large communities and groups representing millions of people having very specific fields of interest. They spend a lot of time on Yahoo! in order to express the same needs.” Bear in mind that a neighborhood website like this will be attractive and hard to replace, and will therefore be attractive to advertisers.

This personalization capability, together with the world’s most advanced technologies for vertical searches, blogs, social networks, and content distribution, is creating what technologically oriented young people love: a page that creates an online identity for a user, with a picture, biography, and blog pages. Such a personal online product is a prodigious advertising anchor, even if its business model is not yet clear. “The potential strategic gain from the blogosphere is substantial, as it could change the way we use the Web… Yahoo! will need to lead in this area if it is to sustain its leadership,” analyst Marianne Wolk writes.

According to Semel, Yahoo! will reinvent both itself and Internet content. “This year, you’ll see more and more links between Yahoo!’s same four basic pages: personalization, communities, content, and search,” he announces. “We’ll enrich the experience and activity of our communities, and enable them to do more than each can do separately. Eventually, before the end of this year, Yahoo! users will be able to not only us these four pages, but also link them to every type of device, so that all the mobile devices in the communications world, including computers, mobile phones, and other mobile devices, can be used with Yahoo!’s four functions.”

Saturday, April 30, 2005 - NORTH ADAMS -- In her lecture, "Talk Shows, Blogs and the Future of News," at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Thursday, writer and journalist Ellen Hume said many new streams of media are getting all the attention, though they are basically regurgitation machines for the more traditional forms of news.

Hume said that 25 percent of ABC's news is generated by its own news staff, 54 percent for CNN and 14 percent for Fox News. A measly 1 percent of all the news found online is uniquely produced by Web site staff writers.

While the ominously, cynically nicknamed Main Stream Media (MSM) or Legacy Media is mocked by its spry, sassy younger brother, the bloggers and Internet news sources are actually working off big bro's stories. There's more, of course. Hume, like many media pundits, says the news is in crisis.

"Having the watchdog bark at everything mean we've lost our bite," she said. "Too much time with Scott Peterson, not enough time with Rwanda."

In what she coined as the "attention economy," the race for the public's eyes and ears generally degenerates to simply a race to the bottom. Serious discourse isn't working it seems, and so the media needs to prod at people with antics to get them to listen, she said.

In this distopian milieu, newsrooms opt for White House press packages, ranting political extremists on cheap-to-run opinion shows and very little verification and fact checking in the daily struggle to "fill their news hole," said Hume.

"We're killing ourselves with entertainment," Hume said. "We're going for the ice cream, instead of the vegetables."

Hume said that the bells and whistles of the new news brings the viewer lost in distraction, a problem easily recognizable in Fox News' dramatic, thumping music or splash of colorful graphics, eerily reminiscent to "Demolition Man's" mocking take on futuristic news.

The blogger phenomenon means anybody and everybody can become a journalist, not with years of groveling and mandatory trips to the local deli, but with one quick jaunt to blogster.com. Hume said that the innovation of Internet news has washed away accountability -- we don't even know who these bloggers are, let alone their credentials.

With the current status of the news and the fog of blog, real news, good news is "having a hard time finding its economic footing," Hume said. Still, while Hume related theories that the news in the future will only be a subsidiary of the mega-global corporation known simply as Googlezon (Google and Amazon), or be used only when viewers don't get one of Jon Stewart's jokes, she said she remains optimistic that good news will survive.

Good news, Hume said, isn't as flashy or fun, and is more costly than maintaining the status quo, but people need it and deserve it. She said journalism at its best is independent -- independent from corporate ownership and independent from sources -- proportionate (think Michael Jackson trial); verified, transparent and accountable. The ultimate goal of a journalist is to be a skeptic, and to denounce and expose those who try to mislead the public, she said.

From consumers and digesters of the daily news, Hume suggested as much critical consideration as she expected from reporters. Ironically, it's easier to find everything nowadays, except the truth. Be a smart shopper, get a variety of news sources and look in places that aren't just a reinforcement of your niche lifestyle, she said.

Hume added that if consumers wanted good journalism, they have to participate by supporting the news financially and complaining about the news when they're not happy with it.

"Consumers beware, journalists -- remember, what your job really is, because if you don't do it, who will?" Hume said.

Hume served as the White House and political correspondent for The Wall Street Journal from 1983 to 1988 and a national reporter with the Los Angeles Times from 1977 and 1983. She was a weekly analyst on CNN's "Reliable Sources," a panelist on PBS's "Washington Week in Review" and periodically visited NBC's "Meeting the Press."

A recipient of many awards, Hume has worked in the media for 30 years and is currently the director of the Center on Media and Society at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

What do you get when you mix a blog with an online photo album and a social network? Probably something resembling what Microsoft and Yahoo have each recently cooked up.

The new Yahoo 360 service is billed ''as a central place online where consumers can easily share what matters most to them and keep connected to people they know.''

Sounds awfully similar to Microsoft's pitch for its new MSN Spaces: '' . . . allows consumers to create personal Internet Spaces sites where they can express themselves in a variety of ways and interact with the people they care about most.''

The two services have a lot more in common than either of the rivals would like to admit.

Both 360 and Spaces are free. Both let users share pictures and lists of favorite books, songs and movies. Both offer fairly simple tools to create a Web log, or blog.

No surprise: Each company also is designing services to keep people inside its online universe -- Yahoo everything this, MSN everything that.

As someone who has managed to resist the blogging phenomenon to date, I found some aspects of both services appealing. The (for now) invitation-only Yahoo 360 site is still in beta-testing phase. The open-to-all MSN Spaces graduated out of beta April 6.

As the finished product, Spaces is off to a head start. You sign up with a Microsoft .Net Passport account at spaces.msn.com. You can customize Spaces by choosing from more than 60 backgrounds and five layout templates. For Ed's Place, I chose a dusky blue background with a silhouette of what could pass as a medieval village.

Inside Spaces are windows, or ''content modules.'' You can drag modules anywhere on a page.

In one such module, I started my blog, opining on a topic that hangs heavy on my heart: the early-season woes of my beloved New York Mets.

Spaces supports RSS 2.0 (Really Simple Syndication). That means anyone with RSS reader software can ''subscribe'' to your blog and keep up on your latest musings -- if you grant each person permission to do so.

Running in a separate module is a slideshow with pictures I uploaded of my daughter. Visitors to your Spaces can pause pictures, change the speed of the slides or click to view full-screen images. Microsoft gives you 30 megabytes of storage for pictures (about 750 compressed images).

I added custom modules to post lists of my favorite movies and directors. I also created a music list from playlists inside Windows Media Player. Someone who clicks on an artist's name, album or song title in the list is taken to the MSN Music store to sample or buy available tunes.

Gmail Capacities Continue To Increase

In 1978 & 1979. I was working on the Cyber M, with 16 Microporcessor Mother Board in a Shoe Box. The Memory chip then the Max size is 64K.

Now, with the present PC Minimum Memory size is half a GB. Let look at the email. The traditional wordprocessing base email is getting let appeal.

More email now are in HTML format. which require bigger memory spaces. Then when more people sending out the Voice mail & by the end of this year, there would be even more momery spaces is need. When the video mail is going for exposion. Therefore, with the Multi-Media Mail which encompass; Data; Voice; Music & Streamming Video, event a 2GB memory capacity can be just nothing special.

Therefore, as the trend moving forward, each vendor's would have to keep up with the trend then lagging behind.

Gmail Capacities Continue To Increase

Last Friday, Google revealed their intentions to increase the storage capacity of Gmail accounts, moving them past the 1-gigabyte mark.

Currently, the Gmail storage capacity resides at 2057 megabytes and it continues to increase. There has been no word from Google on how much longer the increase is going to occur. They have dropped hints that they would be increasing Gmail's capacity past the 2-gigabyte mark on their blog, which says, "to celebrate our birthday, we're giving all Gmail users another gigabyte of space, and then some."

With the counter continuing its increase, which is already past the 2-gig mark, users can only guess where it will stop.

With the Gmail increase well under way, one can imagine Google's competitor's to follow suit. However, Yahoo only recently announced their intentions to increase storage on their free accounts from 250MB to 1GB.

Microsoft's Hotmail, which still resides at a 250MB capacity, has yet to respond to Yahoo and Gmail's recent increases.

A handful of blog-evangelists, a couple of key buys and some libertarian friendly moves have turned Yahoo from a dot.has.been to the new darling of the chattering classes. It is only a matter of time when mainstream media rediscovers Yahoo, and a stock market resurgence follows….

For Yahooligans, 2004 was a year of frustration. No one noticed the fact that company’s stock posted a hefty 72% gain, ending the year at about $38 a share. Overlooked was the fact that it had sales of $3.6 billion and net income of $834 million. That’s twice as much money it raked in 2003, and nearly three times the profit. It is no surprise that many Yahoo insiders felt like the Yankee fans - no matter what they did, they were going to be overshadowed by Google.

Google’s spectacular initial public offering (admittedly that lined Yahoo’s coffers nicely and helped with those profits in 2004) and ensuing hubbub where even political columnists were comparing the minimalist search engine to second coming of Jesus. Not a day went by when someone or the other theorized that Google was going to build a Web OS, a new kind of application framework or even a browser. In the other words Google will turn the web into a giant platform. Google was everywhere! Even in the pages of GQ.

That has tweaked the Yahoo insiders no end! Many had expressed their frustration, for rest of the world not seeing the true value of Yahoo, and how well the company was doing. Google News and Froogle - well I think Jeff Jarvis has some choice words about that. AdWords/AdSense are great, but prone to click fraud. GMail is wonderful, but the ads on my content, no thank-you! An Autolinks brouhaha ensued.

This was precisely the opening Yahoo had been waiting for, to launch some sort of a media assault. Wired assigned Mike Malone, an Internet 1.0 guy to do a story on the company, and its comeback. The UnGoogle was a piece from the dot-com days, fancy wordsmith doing his thing, except it lacked the fire to get a “conversation” started.

The indignity is all the greater when you consider Yahoo!’s numbers: 165 million registered users, 345 million unique visitors a month, $49 billion market cap, and a 62 percent increase in revenue last quarter, bringing 2004 total revenue to $3.6 billion. Yahoo! makes more money and has more patents, services, and users than Google; it even has its own yodel.

And what it also has a couple of guys, I like to call them blog evangelists, who knowingly or not, have brought the right kind of attention to the company. Russell Beattie who recently joined Yahoo has been blogging furiously (much to my annoyance) about Yahoo and its wireless efforts. In normal course of events, Yahoo would have issued a press release, and many of us would have paid little or no attention. Jeremy Zawodny is the other and has helped the company focus on some of the newer social media trends. I have never met him, but if his blog is anything to go by, then perhaps he is spreading the open media religion at Yahoo. The blog-evangelists unlike press relations folks, only write when there is something important to say. That is if they want to maintain their credibility.

Russell and Jeremy are small part of the big equation. After sitting on its haunches for so long, and letting google walk away with the AdSense dollars, Yahoo’s Overture division is finally getting its act together and rolling out its small-publisher service. By buying Flickr earlier this month and OddPost last year, Yahoo has bought into the open-standards, web services business model, something which has gotten it much love from the bloggers who apparently care too much about this type of stuff. Adding RSS and blogs to My Yahoo, makes them cooler than the other two - MSN and Google. In an effort to best Google, the company has upped its free email storage to one gigabyte. Yahoo offered desktop search tool, just like Google. It is launching a blogging-meets-social networking tool, Yahoo 360. I have not seen it but count on blogsphere love for it. The company also announced today that it will search creative commons content. What that means is really nothing for many of the mom-and-pops don’t care about license information etc. But it will get boing-boinged and create the right karma for the company. If you look at all these features, it is not clear that if any one of these will bring any major dollars into the company. It will show to the chattering classes that Yahoo is on the right track. And is embracing new technologies etc. That’s until something new comes along.

Yahoo to Buy Photo-Sharing Site Flickr

NEW YORK - Ludicorp Research & Development Ltd. President Stewart Butterfield on Monday confirmed Internet portal Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) will acquire the privately held company, which operates photo-sharing Web site Flickr.

Butterfield would not disclose terms of the deal, but said Yahoo will release an official statement during the afternoon. There was much speculation Yahoo was interested in acquiring Vancouver-based Ludicorp, whose Flickr service allows users to easily swap photos.

"Yes, we've reached a deal with Yahoo," Butterfield said. "We are being acquired."

The confirmation puts to rest rumors about a possible deal that had been bandied about by Flickr users on Web sites and blogs during recent weeks. The transaction picked up more credence on Sunday when a Ludicorp executive confirmed on the company's staff blog the acquisition had indeed gone through.

The deal received a favorable reaction from Wall Street. Standard & Poor's backed its "Buy" rating on Yahoo, saying the transaction makes "strategic sense." The acquisition was also seen helping Yahoo compete against Google Inc., which owns Picasa, a photo-sharing company.

Flickr allows users to upload digital photos from computers and camera phones, and assemble them into albums that can be posted on blogs and shared with other users. The photo-sharing service will likely become a cornerstone for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company's new "Yahoo 360" concept — which blends blogging and social networking.

Last week, Yahoo said its 360 service will combine instant messaging, photo storage and sharing, and Internet radio together. It is currently being tested by employees, and will be made available to Yahoo users by March 29.

Rivals such as Microsoft Inc.'s MSN.com and Google have already become involved in offering blogging services to users. Search engine Ask Jeeves Inc., which announced Monday it agreed to be acquired by Barry Diller's IAC/InteractiveCorp. for $1.85 billion, also offers similar services.

A spokesman for Yahoo did not immediately return telephone calls. Shares of Yahoo rose 9 cents to $31.20 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.

I have research into the Domain Registrar's for the last 6 months.

I found that Godaddy is no longer the Cheapest!! Also it is noted that their Customer Services Rep is not that friendly , as it suppose to be. Now Godaddy also offer web hosting.. Sp far their offering initially is competitive. But also lagging behind company like Dot 5 & Netfirms!!!!!

If company allow the Customer's Services to take over by Computers or Robotics trainined human services.. then their days would be numbered!!

When I spoken to their Rep on the phone... they just could not careless to take on my free suggestions. They even tell me that that is not my concern!!

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Decades after a combat wound in Vietnam cut short his military career, Bob Parsons still projects a Marine persona: big chest, tightly cropped hair, strong jaw, tough talk.

Over the years, though, the head of Internet domain-name registrar GoDaddy.com has updated his uniform.

The fatigues have been replaced by black Armani slacks and a black Nike mock turtleneck. He has a dozen of each and wears the outfit every day. "It's my work uniform; it's simple," he said.

Six years after becoming an Internet domain-name registrar, GoDaddy is the second-largest domain registry in the world.

And GoDaddy has achieved a not-so-simple something that most of the doomed-to-go-bust dot-coms of the '90s never did — revenue.

Parsons said the privately held company had sales of about $100 million in 2004, and he projects the figure would double in 2005.

Parsons founded the Scottsdale company in 1997, with proceeds from the $64 million sale of another company, Parsons Technology, to Intuit Inc. in 1996. The company has garnered a lot of attention since it aired a racy ad during the Super Bowl and then had the ad, slated to run again later in the game, yanked by Fox.

"We're on our way to becoming a billion-dollar company," he told employees in his quarterly address. "Who knows? We may be there now."

GoDaddy and related subsidiaries help clients obtain and protect Internet domain names that are used to access Web sites. Domain names also are needed to make Internet, or VoIP, phone calls. GoDaddy also designs and hosts Web sites for clients, provides e-mail services and sells software that blocks spam, computer viruses and pop-up ads.

With over 6 million domain names under management, GoDaddy is the world's second-largest registrar service for Internet addresses, slightly behind Network Solutions, which is owned by Phoenix-based Pivotal Private Equity.

The 2005 revenue picture got a big boost from the company's Super Bowl advertising bonanza, which produced 5 million Web site hits in one day and a substantial jump in business, Parsons said.

The ad poked fun at media censorship and showed a tank-top-clad GoDaddy girl (actress Candice Michelle) appearing before a mock congressional censorship hearing.

"It was the NFL (who asked that the ad be pulled)," Parsons said. "Fox approved the ad twice."

Fox's decision to pull the ad landed Parsons interviews in most of the nation's major newspapers and spots on television and radio news programs, including a session with shock jock Howard Stern.

As a result, GoDaddy's one ad garnered the company more exposure than any of the other advertisers.

From Dec. 1 to Feb. 1, media-exposure monitor Multivision Inc. found that GoDaddy's Super Bowl ad was mentioned in nearly 700 broadcasts on local, national and cable television. The broadcasts reached an audience of 262.9 million people, with an estimated publicity value of $11.7 million, according to Multivision.

"It was beyond our wildest dreams," Parsons said.

GoDaddy wasn't an immediate success. In fact, it wasn't even called GoDaddy. The original name was Jomax Technologies, and the business plan was Web site development.

Parsons said he changed the name to GoDaddy because it would be more memorable. "It was kind of fun and had a retro sort of sound to it.

"I came within a whisker of losing all the $64 million (from the sale of Parsons Technology) trying to get this company going," he said.

Finally, he hit on the idea of becoming a domain-name registrar. He'd discovered that 1990s-era domain-name registration was expensive, hard to do and had bad customer service.

"It was a no-brainer," he said. "Offer the best price and the best service and make it simple. ... It was the best hunch I've had — it was the decision that made the company."

Editors Note: The Search Engine Strategies conference kicked off in New York yesterday. As usual, there are a number of panels featuring some very useful and educational information.

How Does Search Behavior Affect You?
One such panel attended by Andy Beal detailed the many different types of search behavior. This section detailed how searchers respond to search results. Are they satisfied or do they have to conduct another search?

With this in mind, how does the behavior of visitors coming from search engines affect the design and optimization of your site? Discuss in WebProWorld.

I love looking at the various surveys and studies that float around in the search space. So you can imagine the drool running down my chin, at the thought of the "Search Behavior" session. Panelists shared details of various recent surveys. It was a cornucopia of search trivia.

Dr Bonny Brown Director of Research and Public Services, Keynote Systems, gave details of their study of 2000+ panelists who were invited to log on to the web using a browser companion that measures browsing habits and asks questions.

They revealed which of the search engines were the most popular. No surprises that Google was the top rated search engine. What was interesting is that out of all of the votes cast, Yahoo, MSN and Ask Jeeves all had double digit gains (compared to the same study 6 months ago), while Google maintained the lead, its growth was the lowest among the big four. A sign the Google juggernaut might be losing a little steam.

Other useful snippets from Brown:

1 in 2 searchers will use another search engine, if they cannot find what they are looking for.

1 in 3 searchers use search engine toolbars - the greatest retention tool the search engines ever created, in my opinion.

17% of searchers use different search engines for different types of searches.

Gord Hotchkiss of Enquiro will probably never have to worry about losing his "search behavior monitoring" crown. As kids today say, "he rocked".

His new study - to be released later today, so you're getting a sneak peak - demonstrated that despite all of the things we think lead to click-thrus and sales, "rank" and "page position" are still the two most important factors to searchers.

Who gets the share of clicks? The number one organic position received 27.4% of all organic clicks, while 51% of all who click on paid results, pick the top paid search listing. This clearly shows that in paid search, you need your ad to be in the top position, while in organic, you can be in the top 3 to 5 results and still get a good share of the click-thrus.

Hotchkiss then went on to display a graph that demonstrated how confidence in search results reduces, the longer it takes a searcher to find what they are looking for. Changing their search request, gave the searcher a brief bump in confidence.

It may be hard to top the next piece of data shared by Hotchkiss. He demonstrated his eye-tracking survey (50 participants) - where participant's eye movements were tracked to accurately record which search results received the most attention.

He showed a Google search results page with an "eye tracking map" that looked similar to a thermal imagery chart (with the "hotspots" showing the most eye contact). The study distinctly showed most eyes look at the top left corner of the search results, with a small coverage at the top of the paid search results.

Hotchkiss explained that a users' eye is drawn to a triangle pattern which he named "Search's Golden Triangle", with searchers scanning from the top left to the page's "fold" line and then left (in a triangle pattern). While the triangle did not really extend below the fold, 60% of participants scrolled down below the fold, with only 40% taking a look at the paid search results on the right (above fold).

Finally he shared some data on how page position impacted visibility and ultimately click-thrus.

28% click on the No.1 position

Drops to 12% by position No. 3

Remainder share 3-12% of click-thrus

Recently, I have been experiencing various Email Scam or Fraudulent Emails, requesting from Banks such as:

Chase

CitiBank

Washington Mutual

& Also

Paypal

These letter normally would address You as "Dear Valued Customer"

& they will also as for your I.D., Social Security Number.. all the private informations.

They also display the logo of the Bank's all credit cards on the their letter or email.

If you receive these letter or emails.. don't respond, cantact the bank or credit card company..
then forward the email to i.e.:

spoof@paypal.com

Also, if possible copy your email to FBI & FTC Fraud reporting unit.

3. Fake links. The text in a link may attempt to look valid, then send you to a spoof address. Always check where a link is going before you click. Move your mouse over it and look at the URL in your browser or email status bar. If the link looks suspicious, don't click on it. And be aware that a fake link may even have the word "PayPal" in it.

My Opinion is that Yes, there are many useful features on OutLook.Live, 2GB of Disk Space... More Spam & Virus Protection.....

Don't get me wrong that before Internet Era, there are no such thing of Business or Commercial Crime. These Crimes existed for thousands years of civilization of mankind.

Lawmakers and law enforcers at last have taken aim at mega-spammers who flood the Internet with a virtual tsunami of unsolicited, unwanted and all-too-often bogus offers of cheap software, pharmaceuticals and home mortgages. Taking aim is a good start, but so far, neither the laws nor the prosecutors have done nearly enough to protect the nation's businesses and individuals from this modern-day scourge.

The use of the word "spam" to describe junk e-mail originated with an old Monty Python gag about a brand of potted meat. The fictitious Python restaurant that served nothing but spam, spam and spam with everything on the menu was a gag years ago, and computer spam is still a gag, although mostly in the other sense of the word, today.

People who rarely use the Internet or not at all might argue that junk e-mail doesn't really matter and that there are more serious crimes for cops to solve and more heinous criminals for attorneys, judges and juries to prosecute, convict and sentence. But spam has its victims. We're all plagued by it day after day, and indeed, the damage is worsening over time.

E-mail security service MessageLabs scanned more then 12 billion e-mail messages last year and found a whopping 73 percent of them were spam, a significant increase from the also horrifying 40 percent figure of the prior year. New laws and high-profile prosecutions of spammers clearly haven't stopped any of the spam that flows through the Internet. More laws and more prosecutions are needed as are efforts to pressure other countries to take spam seriously as well.

Spam costs businesses and individuals time and money. The time is spent to filter spam, block spam, search through spam and delete spam. The money is spent to buy anti-spam software along with the requisite annual upgrades and subscriptions and to add more computing power to handle the inflow. Add to that the psychological torture inflicted on employees who have to sort through hundreds of junk messages every day, and the cost to society as a whole is far from negligible.

Spam also casts a negative image on legitimate e-mail marketing to receptive potential customers. It clogs up the Internet and bumps up Internet service providers' costs, which then are passed along to Internet users. Spam helps crooks perpetrate illegal and harmful scams and frauds, and it diverts law enforcement resources from other crimes to the necessary investigation and prosecution of spammers.

Put one of your own e-mail addresses on a high-traffic Web site, and you'll soon be buried under hundreds of junk messages every day. Yes, you can block it and yes, you can delete it, but why should you have to spend your time and money on such activities? And add to that the time-consuming hunt for legitimate messages that otherwise might be lost or discarded because they were caught in the spam filter or looked too suspicious to open.

The sad truth about spam is that too many people open it, read it and act on it. Spam works, just like telemarketing and junk U.S. mail. It's a numbers game in which a mere 1 or 2 percent response rate is considered a win. Economies of scale make spam even more attractive to scammers than either telemarketing or junk U.S. mail. The cost of sending more spam is essentially the same as the cost of sending less spam. Spam can be sent without telephones, dialing machines or telemarketers. Nor does the spammer need envelopes, paper or postage stamps.

Here's how you can help fight spam:

* Ignore it. Don't open it. Don't reply to it. Don't forward it, and definitely don't buy anything promoted in it.
* Forward suspicious spam to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
* Keep the pressure on lawmakers to get tough on mega-spammers.
* If you send commercial e-mail solicitations, understand and comply with the federal CAN-SPAM law and include a legitimate opt-out mechanism for recipients.
* Educate yourself about spam and other cyber scams like phishing and identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission offers a number of publications that contain useful information about these subjects.

Spam. It's no longer just potted meat, but we're all still gagging on it.
